2 Kentucky Derby Menus with Make-Ahead Recipes

Kentucky Derby Recipes & Entertaining Ideas

Every year, the thunder of hooves and the iconic call of “And, they’re off!” mark the Kentucky Derby horse race, one of the most exciting sporting events in America. But beyond the race itself, Derby Day is steeped in tradition, from elaborate hats to refreshing mint juleps.

For many families, like mine, it’s something even more personal. My Kentucky-born mother instilled in us a love for the Bluegrass State’s traditions, and we still celebrate with fanfare, festivities, and, of course, delicious food!

🐎 A Taste of Kentucky on Derby Day

Kentuckians - and honorary Kentuckians during Derby season - often gather for festive celebrations filled with classic dishes like Benedictine Cheese and Derby Pie (also known as Chocolate Pecan Pie).

Whether you're planning a casual get-together or a more elegant evening, having a menu built around recipes you can prepare in advance makes hosting feel much more relaxed.

So, I’ve put together two complete Kentucky Derby menus, featuring make-ahead recipes rooted in Kentucky tradition - including favorites like Kentucky Cheese Torte, Hot Browns, and Derby Pie:

• My mom’s traditional Derby Day dinner

• A more casual menu for a relaxed gathering

You’ll also find ideas for creating a festive Derby atmosphere, managing timing, and adding a few fun touches for your guests.

(Note: While created with Derby Day in mind, these menus also work beautifully for any spring gathering.)

A Signature Derby Cocktail

Our Family's Mint Julep Recipe

No Derby celebration at our house would be complete without this classic bourbon cocktail. What sets our version apart is the layered mint flavor: we use fresh, crushed mint in the drink and infuse it into the simple syrup, creating a smoother, more pronounced mint note throughout.

However you celebrate, I hope your Derby Day is filled with great food, fun traditions, and time with people you enjoy.

Take care,

Lee

Three Easy Ways to Host a Summer Picnic One of my favorite ways to entertain in summer is with a picnic-style dinner, either at a summer concert or in the backyard. I learned this style of entertaining from my mom, who loved planning easy, make-ahead meals that could be served almost anywhere. Over the years, Mom became an expert at picnic-style entertaining, whether we were attending a summer concert at the Denver Botanic Gardens, hosting a garden party at home, or tailgating before a Denver...
